Harpsichord: Harpsichord, Spinet, Clavichord and Fortepiano
The harpsichord is a historical keyboard instrument whose strings are plucked by a small plectrum when a key is pressed, and it is a core instrument of Renaissance and Baroque music. Kuğu Müzik is the authorised dealer in Türkiye for Germany’s J.C. Neupert and supplies its harpsichord, spinet, clavichord and fortepiano models to order. In our Ataşehir showroom you can try second-hand Bizzi harpsichords, hire a harpsichord or practise by the hour in our practice room.
What to know when choosing a harpsichord:
- Single or double manual: Single-manual harpsichords are more compact; a double manual makes register combinations and the French repertoire easier
- Registers: The 8′ and 4′ string choirs and the lute (buff) stop shape the colour of the sound
- Transposing: Many models can switch between a1 = 440 and 415 Hz, which is important for playing at Baroque pitch
- Maintenance: Plectra and tuning need regular attention; stable humidity is the most important condition for a harpsichord

The Difference Between Harpsichord, Spinet, Clavichord and Fortepiano
| Instrument | How the sound is produced | Key feature |
|---|---|---|
| Harpsichord | The string is plucked by a plectrum | Bright, powerful sound; concerts, orchestra and basso continuo |
| Spinet | The string is plucked by a plectrum | Single register, compact size; home and practice |
| Clavichord | The string is struck by a metal tangent | Very soft, touch-sensitive sound; quiet practice |
| Fortepiano | The string is struck by a leather-covered hammer | Can be played piano and forte; Classical-era repertoire |
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a harpsichord and a piano?
On a harpsichord, the strings are plucked by a plectrum; however hard the key is pressed, the volume does not change. On a piano, the strings are struck by hammers and the volume follows the touch.
Should I buy a single- or double-manual harpsichord?
Most of the Baroque repertoire can be played on a single-manual harpsichord. A double manual is an advantage for French harpsichord music, some of Bach’s works and register combinations.
Can I try a harpsichord before buying?
Yes. You can try the second-hand Bizzi harpsichords in our showroom by appointment, or use one for a while with our harpsichord rental option.
Can I sell my second-hand harpsichord to Kuğu Müzik?
No, Kuğu Müzik does not buy second-hand harpsichords. When you buy a new harpsichord, we can consider a part-exchange together.
