Neupert Clavichord

The clavichord is one of the oldest and softest-sounding keyboard instruments; when a key is pressed, a brass blade (tangent) at its end strikes the string and sets it vibrating. Because the pressure on the key controls even the finest nuances of the sound, it was much loved as a home and practice instrument in the Baroque and Classical periods. Neupert makes two unfretted clavichords, the table-top Kuhnau and the five-octave Philipp Emanuel; Kuğu Müzik is the authorised J.C. Neupert dealer in Türkiye, and the clavichords are available to order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a clavichord and a harpsichord?

On a harpsichord, the strings are plucked by a plectrum; on a clavichord, a brass tangent at the end of the key strikes the string and stays in contact with it as long as the key is held down. This lets the player control the volume and a gentle vibrato (Bebung) with the finger, but the sound is much softer than a harpsichord.

What does unfretted clavichord mean?

On fretted clavichords, several keys share the same string, and these keys cannot be played at the same time. Both Neupert models are unfretted; because each key has its own string, every combination of notes can be played together.
