Neupert Harpsichord
Neupert Harpsichords, which produce historical German instruments, are the finest products in this field.
History and a Portrait of Neupert
After completing his apprenticeship, Johann Christoph Neupert, together with Johann Baptist Streicher from Vienna, established his own workshop in Münchberg in 1868 to manufacture pianos. Starting with entry-level models, NEUPERT instruments gained an excellent reputation, necessitating a move to the more accessible and larger city of Bamberg in 1874.
Thanks to the passion of Johann Christoph Neupert and his grandchildren for collecting historical keyboard instruments, over 300 valuable examples were gathered. This collection has been on display at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg since 1968.
The first NEUPERT harpsichords were built in 1906 by the founder’s three sons; this was a historic event. Over the following decades, historical keyboard instruments were reconstructed. Thanks to the original instruments in the Neupert Collection and the organological research carried out by Hanns Neupert, a grandson of one of the company’s founders, NEUPERT instruments gained a worldwide reputation.
Considering that historical keyboard instruments remain an indispensable part of our musical life today, it can be said that NEUPERT instruments play a defining role in this field. This encompasses the experience gained from the approximately 20,000 historical instruments produced to date.
Neupert instruments are crafted from carefully selected materials by skilled specialists working in the tradition of the old craft. Their sound quality and absolute reliability are well known in music centres around the world.
Caring for your instrument is one of our top priorities. Our workshop in Bamberg and our representatives in many countries around the world guarantee the maintenance of your instrument for generations to come. Even decades from now, you will be able to obtain spare parts for older models without any issues.
Neupert Workshops produces historical keyboard instruments, including harpsichords, spinets, clavichords, virginal and fortepianos, from various schools. Instruments are restored to meet the customer’s requirements.
The modern 20th-century harpsichord occupies a unique and independent place, not being based on any specific historical model. Constructed using the ‘Rastenbauweise’ (a robust, framed construction) found in the ‘Telemann’, ‘Couperin’, ‘Cristofori’ and ‘Bach’ models, these instruments are characterised by a wide range of recording possibilities and varying features (such as pedals). Their sounds are entirely “original” to 20th-century harpsichord music.
Whether you prefer prehistoric or 20th-century-style instruments, J.C. NEUPERT can offer a wide range of options to suit your personal choice and will help you create your own custom-designed instrument.
