Harpsichords
Harpsichord, a stringed and keyboard instrument similar to the piano. The harpsichord produces sound by pulling the strings with a plectrum moved by a small lever that is activated when the key is pressed. This is the main difference between the harpsichord and the piano. Although the piano works with the same mechanism, it produces sound by the small pulls of the lever striking the strings.
The ancestors of the harpsichord are psalterim and tympanum. The harpsichord, whose sound range exceeds 4 octaves, has two keyboards on top of each other and 55 keys. The harpsichord, which experienced its heyday in the 18th century, was later replaced by the piano. Today, the harpsichord is used only for the performance of works composed for this instrument.
